Brian Smithson

Job Title: Business Director / Co-Founder
Location: Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire

Profile

Born in 1950, of a Northern family, Brian had a traditional upbringing through Grammar School and local college. He served an apprenticeship in electrical engineering, which gave him a lifelong fascination in how things work.

After serving his apprenticeship, Brian travelled a bit and gained some knowledge of the world. Moving from the North to the South, after getting married in 1973, Brian settled into married life and changed direction, becoming a retail manager for a well-known electrical retailing company.

After some upheavals in this space, it was time for a change and a shift was made into pub ownership. In this trade, Brian learned the basics of marketing, design and business. Developing a stocktaking business during this time meant that he was well-placed to form his own company when the licenced trade moved to all-day opening.

Becoming a business person meant that the design and marketing skills were needed more than being able to count bottles of beer, so a final move was made to become a print designer and publisher.

Brian gained many small clients through his contacts in the licenced trade and developed a thriving business. Fate intervened again in the form of the Monopolies and Mergers Commission report on the trade, which meant that many pubs and similar outlets were released onto the open market, where a lot of clients suddenly disappeared.

Another change was deemed to be necessary and so Brian set about building a new set of clients, including Bloor Research. Brian became their Publication Manager, producing a wide range of printed and electronic material for them and this is where he met Miles, who was developing the web sites, including Bloor’s own site, as well as IT-Analysis.com and IT-Director.com.

Moving from Bloor to form electronicdawn Limited with Miles, we have successfully taken on the mantle of developing those sites as well as building a thriving business in other publishing spheres.

Interests

Brian is interested in all things electronic and, like Miles, has a keen interest in photography. Colour, design and typography are a particular interest. Spare time is scarce but, when available, he likes to get immersed in science fiction, both reading and film/TV.
